KRISTIAN RUSSELL

ILLUSTRATION : PRINT DESIGN

Kristian Russell bases his style with references from the world of music, fashion, youth culture and has worked internationally for many fashion magazines throughout the years as well creating work for advertising campaigns. Currently based in Los Angeles he has a history of working in New York, London and Stockholm where the cosmopolitan input adds to his vision of fiery graphics.

In the late 90s he did a host of illustrated collaborations with fashion stylists for magazines like Flaunt. Jalouse, Vogue Brazil, Dazed & Confused, Arena, Bibel, GQ, Nylon and many more. In an age of digital implementation Kristian Russell mixed drawn elements with vektor graphics with a pioneering spirit. Many of the shapes were abstract and the colour combinations daring. These fashion images lead to record covers for artists such as Macy Gray, RZA from Wutang Clan and work with Lil Kim, Mary J Blige & Kelis.

From 2008 he worked in house at H&M gaining an extended understanding of textile print design and surface print. Areas of apparel included swimwear, sportswear, men’s trend and LOGG vintage prints. After going freelance he has worked for Marc Jacobs, /Nyden, Peak Performance and Björn Borg Apparel. Los Angeles has a unique vintage scene providing great inspiration for all styles of print.

What he is perhaps best known for in Sweden are the seasonal rock posters for legendary Gröna Lund who have had illustrated posters since the mid 1960s. Kristian Russell took over in 2001 and has created eye catching illustrations of hundreds of artists such as Lady Gaga, Elton John, Iggy Pop, Beastie Boys, Lenny Kravitz, Alice Cooper, Sting, Marilyn Manson, Beck.

Other international advertising campaigns have included Nike Ballers campaign in Asia, posters for the Swedish Green Party (Miljöpartiet) and illustrated work for Citroen, Sony, Coca Cola and Defected Records.
